How to Tune Your Ukulele
Standard ukulele tuning is G C E A. Unlike guitar, the G string (4th string) is higher pitched than the C string (3rd string) - this is called re-entrant tuning.
- 1Click 'Start Tuning' and allow microphone access
- 2Pluck the 4th string (closest to you) - it should be G (392 Hz)
- 3Tune the 3rd string to C (261.63 Hz)
- 4Tune the 2nd string to E (329.63 Hz)
- 5Tune the 1st string (closest to floor) to A (440 Hz)
- 6Remember: ukulele tuning isn't low-to-high like guitar!
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard ukulele tuning is G C E A. The G string is tuned high (G4, 392 Hz), higher than the C and E strings. This 're-entrant' tuning gives the ukulele its characteristic bright sound.
Standard tuning has a high G (G4). Low G tuning drops the G string one octave lower (G3, 196 Hz). Low G gives you a wider range for fingerpicking and melody playing, but changes the traditional ukulele sound.
Baritone ukuleles use D G B E tuning - the same as the four highest guitar strings. This is lower than soprano/concert/tenor tunings and produces a deeper, more guitar-like tone.
A common mnemonic is 'Good Charlie Eats A lot' or 'Goats Can Eat Anything' for G-C-E-A. The strings go from the one closest to your face (G) to the one closest to the floor (A).
